Quilts for Soldiers

Dear Friends,

Awhile back I came across some information about a charity that has touched my heart. It is called "Quilts for Soldiers".  The purpose of this charity is to provide a quilt for every one of our young men and women who are injured while protecting our home front. I think this is a wonderful idea, and I really want to become a part of this effort, and provide an opportunity for quilters in the area to become involved, too.

After our opening event (6/3/05 & 6/4/05) we will meet once a month, here at Stitchin' Time, on the 1st Wednesday of every month.  For more information on the Quilts for Soldiers organization go to www.qovf.org. If you have any questions about how you can join our efforts, please give us a call at 208-735-4094.

Twin Falls Centennial Quilt

The Twin Falls Centennial Quilt is a collage of memories with a special story behind it.  In mid 2003, several members of the Desert Sage Quilters of Magic Valley volunteered to design and make a quilt to give to the fine people of Twin Falls.  Little did those stalwart and eager quilters know that this quilt would bring many challenges to be overcome before its completion.  As these women met at the local quilting shop, "Stitchin' Time" owned by Cathy Reitz to discuss how this quilt should look and what design elements it should employ, it became apparent that this quilt would be a unique original ideally suited to depict life - both past and present - in Twin Falls as the beautiful city by the Snake River Canyon. The challenge was how to incorporate the MANY aspects of Twin Falls' unique history with themes that represent life for its residents today. This vision has been beautifully realized in the finished quilt; and the women below presented this quilt with love and gratitude to the City of Twin Falls.

All of the following women pieced or embroidered the many places, items, and activities depicted in the quilt:

  • Naomi Ames - Special Thanks

  • Peggy Jardine - Co-Chairman

  • Cathy Reitz - Co-Chairman - Special Thanks

  • Sheri Wills

  • Joan Anderson

  • Linda Ledbetter

  • Roberta Robertson

  • Elizabeth McVey - Special Thanks

  • Marilyn Gardner

  • Julie Allen

  • Jane Slickers

  • Stephanie VanDiest

The committee spent many hours at the store and home, and donated materials to help finish the quilt.

Local Machine Quilter, Ann Trotter, did the quilting on her longarm quilting machine. The Desert Sage Quilters donated money for materials, and Cathy Reitz of Stitchin' Time also donated materials and the classroom facility located in her store, to fabricate the quilt.

Gathered together at Stitchin' Time to put the "finishing touch" (the binding) on the quilt.

The finished product!

"Lest We Forget"

Update:

The winner of the quilt raffle was Lynn Bodkin of Kimberly.  A check for $3500 was presented to Brian Coffey of the Valley House.  Patterns for this quilt are available at Stitchin' Time.

This patriotic quilt began as a way to route all the negative thoughts and nightmares of September 11th into something positive and helpful for our community. The quilt is being raffled with all the proceeds going to The Valley House, a homeless shelter here in Twin Falls. The raffle donation tickets are $1.00 each.

The project was started by having a "Night Out With Dakota Designs" at Twin Falls Sewing Center. We had a wonderful potluck and embroidered for four hours. There were eighteen ladies that contributed embroidered squares. We have embroidery designs from Viking, Dakota and some free ones from the internet in the finished quilt.

We had the wonderful opportunity to hang our quilt, which we named "Lest We Forget" behind the podium at the opening ceremony of the Twin Falls Olympic Torch celebration. We sold tickets to people from seven different states.

The quilt was designed and constructed by Naomi Ames, Julie Allen and  Joan Anderson. It contains ultra suede appliqué, trapunto, machine embroidery, pieced blocks, and piping within the quilt and next to the binding. We found all the fabric except for the ultra suede at Stitchin' Time.

It has been very exciting to see the wonderful enthusiastic response from everyone that sees the quilt. The response from local businesses to display the quilt and sell tickets has been great.

Our special thanks to Larry and Darla Himple at Twin Falls Sewing Center for donation of supplies and never failing support and encouragement. Also to Liz Mandelkow of Quilted For You for donations and machine quilting.

We plan to have the drawing the first week in June. You don't need to be present to win. Tickets can be purchased at Stitchin' Time, Everybody's Business, Pioneer Floors, Twin Falls Sewing Center, First Federal at Washington & Falls, Irwin Realty, and Quilted For You.
