1^st, measure the center of your quilt from top to bottom. 

  This measurement is____________

  2^nd, measure the sides of your quilt.

  Right side measures ______________

If there is more than ½” difference from the center to the sides, you may need to trim a little off the sides. 

Using the length of your fabric, cut 2 strips the length of the center measurement, one for each side of the border.  If you need to piece your fabric to get your length, I would recommend piecing on the diagonal.  It is harder to find a diagonal seam than a straight seam.   Find and mark the center and then the quarters of your borders. If this is a very large quilt, you may want to do your top in eighths.  Now do the same with your quilt top.  Pin at the center, at each end, then between the top and the center, and between the bottom and the center.

If your quilt top is larger than your border, place your quilt top next to the feed dogs in order to ease the excess into your quilt top.  It is much easier to ease fabric if the larger amount of fabric is on the bottom, next to the feed dogs.

Now measure your quilt top with the side borders attached, through the center.

Again, if the top or bottom measurement is more than ½” off, you may need to trim a bit to square up your quilt. 

This does take some extra work, but it is well worth the time and effort, and you will be pleased with the results!  It will also save you money if you are having your quilt quilted by a professional quilter, as they won’t have to charge you extra for squaring up your quilt.
